Lead, Learn, Serve - Go Greek!

With sorority & fraternity recruitment approaching this January, we thought we would take a minute to orient you on how you can provide the best support to your student who may be considering membership. Sorority and Fraternity life is a rich and varied part of involvement at the Ohio State University. These organizations provide a unique opportunity for young men and women to practice extraordinary leadership skills; they allow the opportunity to be held accountable to high academic achievement; and they provide students with an environment to practice service in our greater Columbus community. They are all about leadership, learning, and service- and those 3 values- leading, learning, and serving, are what unites all of our fraternities and sororities with a common purpose.

In that spirit, we invite you to visit the Lead, Learn, Serve website - headquarters for our comprehensive virtual campaign on the value of joining a sorority or fraternity at The Ohio State University. On the website you'll see a series of testimonial videos of community members - including President Gee as well as fellow parents- speaking on their own experiences as an advocate of our community.  So take some time to explore the site, and learn how you can best support your student. There is even a page just for parents!

Or email us at sl-ouleadlearnserve@osu.edu.

If your student wishes to register for recruitment, they can do so on this site.

Go to the Gator Bowl with the Buckeyes!

The Buckeyes are heading to sunny Florida and you can be too!

Join the Office of Student Life on Ohio State's Official Student, Parent, Faculty, and Staff Bowl Tour as our Buckeyes battle in the 67th Annual TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, FL on January 2, 2012. As a parent, you and your family are eligible to purchase bowl tour packages that include travel, lodging at the team hotel, and game day ticket.

Land only packages are still available for the game. For pricing information and to order packages, visit http://go.osu.edu/bowltour.

Please Note: Classes begin on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. Students planning to be absent from class should make arrangements in advance with each instructor. Faculty are not obligated to make accomodations, and their decisions are final.

Get Involved - Winter Involvement Fair

After taking a quarter to get settled into a new academic year, is your student looking for that extracurricular opportunity to cap their college experience? The Winter Involvement Fair is a great opportunity for new and returning students to explore additional options for campus involvement. The Winter Involvement Fair gives students a perfect chance to meet people and learn about the great things Ohio State's student organizations have to offer. This year, the Winter Involvement Fair will take place on Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 6pm-9pm in the Archie Griffin Ballroom at the Ohio Union.

For more information, or to contact the Winter Involvement Fair Chairperson, visit the website.

First-Time Renters Guide

Is your student considering living off campus next year? Make sure that they have all the information they need to find a safe and legal living situation.

First, sit down with your student and discuss finances. If a student has never rented before, many of the costs can seem confusing. Introduce your student to the costs of renting with a few preliminary questions:

-How much can they afford to pay for rent? Your student should account for utilities (water, gas, and electricity) and other expenses (cable and internet).

-Are they going to live alone or with a roommate? What is their roommate's budget?

-Students should choose roommates carefully and be in a position to pay the entire rent for a unit. Generally, students sign leases with a joint and several liability clause, which means that any one tenant may be held liable for the lease terms, including rent and damages to the property. In other words, if a roommate bails on your student, they could be left paying the entire lease amount.

On Campus Housing Contract Renewal

Current on-campus students are given the option to renew their residence hall contract annually, though they are only required to live on campus for their first year.
Contract renewal typically takes place in the early winter quarter from January 25 to February 8. Students will be emailed housing information via their OSU email accounts and the contracts will be submitted electronically. Your student's residence hall staff (Hall Director and RA) will have all the information you need should your student decide to remain in the residence halls for the next year.

It is very important that students be on the look out for the renewal email and abide by the deadlines given. Failure to do so will likely result in your student not being able to reside on campus next year.

For specific questions and more information, contact University Housing at 614-292-8266 or visit their website here.
