Monthly Workshop Prepares Families to Support Student Well-being

September 25, 2024

Though college can be a rewarding and exciting experience, it is not uncommon to also be associated with feelings of stress, anxiety, depression and more.

Ohio State’s Counseling and Consultation Service (CCS) has a plethora of mental health resources available to students, from individual and group therapy offerings, UWill to Let’s Talk Consultations, but which would you suggest to your student if they ask for your advice?

“Supporting Your Buckeye’s Plan for Mental Health and Well-being" is a virtual workshop offered monthly for parents, families and supporters of Ohio State students to learn more about the mental health resources available on campus. During the workshop, attendees will learn which resources may be most beneficial for their student should they need assistance, ranging from resources for mild concerns to resources for urgent/emergency situations.

“Mental health treatment is not a one-size-fits-all approach,” Jennifer Lang, the Assistant Director for Clinical Services within CCS said. According to Lang, the monthly family workshop was developed alongside the Drop-In Workshops that are offered to students during the academic year. Since its inception two years ago, the workshop has informed hundreds of families about how to support their student’s well-being at Ohio State.

Parents and family members play an important role in a student’s well-being and have a different perspective than a mental health professional. Through the workshop, supporting your student’s well-being at Ohio State is a partnership between the student, their family and CCS to ensure the student is receiving the help that they need.

To protect student privacy, the workshop is not intended to be a space to share confidential information about a student’s specific situation. If you have questions or concerns about your student’s well-being and need guidance, please contact Counseling and Consultation Service at (614) 292-5766 and request a call back from a counselor. You may also contact Jennifer Lang directly via email at lang.212@osu.edu

The next workshop will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24 at 4:30 p.m. ET. Registration is required and can be completed online. While the workshop is not recorded, families who are unable to attend the October workshop can check the Family and Loved Ones page of the CCS website for details on the November workshop when it becomes available. The content is the same each month, but families are welcome to attend again for a refresher.

In addition to the monthly workshop, families are encouraged to listen to the Psych Bytes podcast offered through CCS. Each episode features a deep dive into a specific topic related to mental health, including an episode specifically for parents and family members.
