2017 Move-in Information

Buckeye Parent News

Parents and Families - Good afternoon! We hope everyone had a great summer. Below you will find information on move-in, Welcome Week, fee payment for fall semester and some important dates for the academic year. We hope you find this information helpful.

If this is your first time receiving our communications, WELCOME! Buck-i-Briefs are sent only a few times per year to provide special information or updates to our Ohio State families. Most publications won't be as long as this one but we want to be sure you have ALL the information you need about move-in. Once the academic year begins, you will also begin to receive a weekly email entitled onCampus that provides a week to week snapshot of events and activities at Ohio State. We will also send out a monthly publication, Buckeye Parent, which will also contain great information about happenings at Ohio State. Finally, our first year families will occasionally also receive a special newsletter specifically for our incoming students that is produced by the great staff in First Year Experience.

We know many of you have made updates to your email addresses over the summer or even during orientation. We are still working to process all of those updates. I think we've got most of them but we may have missed a few. We hope to have those done in the next couple of weeks. If you're unsure if we received your update or you need to make an update to your email address, you can easily complete our on-line form and we'll make that change for you. You can find our form on-line by clicking here. Just complete the information and we'll make the change.

Finally, if you wish to unsubscribe from future messages, you can find a link below (left column)

Welcome to our Ohio State family! We hope to see you soon. Go Bucks!

Move-In 2017 Information

Move-in day is highly orchestrated to avoid confusion and congestion due to the high number of vehicles and people on campus. This year, assisted Move-in day is Saturday, August 19. Earlier Move-in options are available by calling Student Life University Housing at 614-292-8266.

If your student is living on campus, he or she received details via e-mail with an outline of what to expect (please note hard copies will not be sent, so it is important that students check their inbox). If your student has not shared this information with you, be sure he or she checks the Ohio State email account as all information has been sent to that address. Here are just a few things to know before you arrive:

• Ohio State utilizes a move-in scheduling system which allows for students to sign up for a timeslot to arrive for Move-in. This helps with traffic flow. Students can use the system if they are arriving on Thursday (August 17) for Early Move-in or OWL Move-in (more information on OWL below) or Saturday. If your student has not already done so, he/she should please sign up for a time slot. In order to best manage traffic and wait times, it will be important to plan your student’s arrival to the Schottenstein Center at his/her scheduled time.

• Some procedures are different each day, so check out this website for detailed information specific to the day you are arriving. Please note that Move-in on August 19 (and early Move-in on August 17) begins at the Schottenstein Center for all students regardless of residence hall or class rank.

• Use U.S. 315 South to access campus and exit at Ackerman Road. Your GPS may suggest a different exit off 315, but traffic is restricted in the area, making Ackerman Road the best exit to avoid long delays in your arrival. Do not use either the Lane Avenue or Medical Center Drive exits. And, due to construction on High Street, we recommend you do not use I-71.

• Be patient. There are 7,000 students moving in, so there may be wait times and delays while others move in ahead of you.

• If you are moving in on Saturday, text “Saturday” to 67283 to receive critical updates (standard messaging rates apply). Also, follow @studentlifeosu on Twitter.

• Be sure your student remembers to bring his or her BuckID. This is needed for Move-in. If your student has not yet gotten a BuckID or forgets it, there is the ability to get one made on-site. Costs may apply for lost BuckIDs.

• If your student has purchased Ohio State football tickets, they can be picked up on August 19 while you are moving in. The box office at the Schottenstein Center will be open. Tickets can also be picked up during regular box office hours during the week.

• Please handle all bill payment or financial aid questions prior to arrival. The fee payment deadline for autumn 2017 is Tuesday, August 15. The Student Service Center, because of campus traffic patterns, will not be open on August 19 and will resume regular hours on Monday, August 21.

• If a student living on campus wishes to arrive before August 19, contact Student Life University Housing to make arrangements by calling 614-292-8266.

• You can find details of the Move-in procedure online. If you are arriving early, please be sure you review the early arrival Move-in map and information. This will provide a clear understanding of where you can park. Please follow all posted unloading and parking signs unless directed by a law enforcement officer. This includes no parking on sidewalks and parking in an ADA space without the correct parking placard. The correct placard includes the ADA placard from CampusParc (ADA parking information is available online). There are ADA spots available in most garages that do not require the additional placard from CampusParc.

• Meal plans will begin for students with breakfast on Thursday, August 17. Move-in week dining hours are online. Students can quickly and easily make changes to the dining plan until the second Friday of every semester. More information about the dining plans is online.

• Should you have any questions about Move-in, please contact Student Life University Housing at 614-292-8266.

OWL Move In Details

Is your first year student participating in the OWL Program? OWL stands for Ohio Welcome Leaders. This is the group of dedicated students who move into the residence halls a few days early so they can assist the remaining on-campus students with move-in on August 19. OWL assisted Move-In is scheduled for Thursday, August 17, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. All OWLs will start the move in process near the Schottenstein Center; please use the Ackerman Road exit off U.S. 315. Students and families will receive information on next steps after checking-in at the Buckeye Lots. Student staff and volunteers will be available during this timeframe to assist you with moving your student's belongings.

You can schedule a time for OWL/Early Arrival Move-in online at

Living Off Campus? Resources Available!

Though August 19 is the big day for students to move into our on-campus residence halls, many off-campus students have already begun their move-in process as many off-campus leases begin in early August.

The Office of Student Life’s Off-Campus and Commuter Student Services provides many resources and opportunities for our non-residential students to stay connected with Ohio State. Serving as the central resource center for off-campus living and commuting, Off-Campus and Commuter Student Services can provide your student with the means to find housing and roommates, resources to encourage safe practices in the off-campus area, and support your student while being a responsible neighbor in the Buckeye community.

  • Create a budget to help track your finances and assist with spending decisions:
    • Beyond the cost of books and tuition, consider other living expenses such as rent, utilities, food, parking, student renters insurance and more.
    • Typically landlords require a security deposit, first/last month’s rent, and an application fee alongside your lease agreement.
    • Schedule a free financial coaching session through the Student Wellness Center’s Scarlet and Gray Financial program:
    • Don’t forget about Renters Insurance! Check your family’s homeowner insurance policy to see if your rental unit is covered; if not, student renters insurance is typically $10-20/month.
  • Consider where you live:
    • For those living further than walking distance, consider utilizing the COTA bus lines for transportation to and from campus.
  • Set up utility services (Gas, electric, water, cable/internet):
    • Call utility companies two weeks in advance to ensure your service is set up by move-in time.
    • Research internet/cable providers and schedule your installation appointment well in advance.
    • Discuss with your roommates who will be responsible for paying utility bills and ensuring payments are made in a timely manner. o Conduct a fire safety check: Check for a fire extinguisher in the unit, preferable one on each level of the home.
    • Ensure there are functioning smoke detectors in every room, including each bedroom, and a carbon monoxide detector on each level of the home.
    • Schedule a free 20-minute home walk-through with the Off-Campus Housing Excellence Program (, to get free tips from Student Life and the Columbus Fire Department on how to reduce safety risks at home, as well as free door/window alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. o Protect your security deposit:
    • Take photos and videos of the entire unit upon move-in for your records.
    • Make a list of any items that could be repaired when you move in, including but not limited to: wall markings, damaged carpet, door/window issues.
    • Many landlords provide a unit condition form for tenants to complete upon move-in; be sure to complete this on time so you are not liable for any pre-existing damages when you move out.
    • Keep written documentation of any contact you have with your landlord; for example, any phone conversations should be followed up with an email to document the conversation and retain for your records.
  • Be on the lookout for upcoming events:
    • Off-Campus Community Welcome: On Friday, August 18th, members of the university community and city officials will be walking door-to-door welcoming off-campus students and offering free resources.
