First-Generation Families
Being the first member in a family to attend college is a great sense of pride and honor for any student. These first-generation college students epitomize the American Dream of higher education. At Ohio State we believe college can be a reality for everyone, no matter your income or background. It's a matter of finding good information, the right people to help and planning wisely. Ohio State offers many resources for first generation college students and their families.
Buckeyes First - First-Generation Student Support and Resources
The Buckeyes First program provides access, information and education to students who identify as first-generation students. It supports students in reaching their fullest potential by equipping them with the skills and resources necessary to eliminate barriers to their success. The academic year support for Buckeyes First early arrival program participants allows for:
- Continuous promotion of a campus culture that values the diversity that all of our students bring
- Cultivating an awareness and pride around first generation student culture
- Providing a comprehensive support network for first generation students that begins with pre-college initiatives and extends to future alumni engagement/support
Buckeyes First Student Organization
The Buckeyes First student organization is intended for first-generation college students. The group meets regularly throughout the year, discussing topics that support the academic and social transition of first-generation students. It also connects first-generation students with faculty, staff, and community members to help students develop a social network of support. Buckeyes First hosts a variety of awareness events to acknowledge the intersecting identities and interests in their community to foster a sense of belonging. Their cornerstone day is November 8, which is the National First-Generation College Student Day.
